Choosing a knitted-fabric supplier: a guide for brands and designers

Compare suppliers on product fit, sample quality, technical communication, production capacity, finishing options and how clearly they define tolerances and delivery.

Start with your collection requirements

Before comparing suppliers, write down the product, composition, construction, weight, width, colour, finishing, quantity and delivery needs. A precise brief makes offers easier to compare and helps identify whether a supplier's capabilities match the project.

What to compare

Review samples against your finished product, not just a brochure. Ask how parameters are measured, which tolerances apply, how samples are approved and how production batches are identified. Discuss capacity, minimum order, lead time, finishing options and what happens if a sample does not meet the agreed specification.

Clear answers and realistic commitments are more useful than broad claims of the “highest quality”. Check references and documents relevant to your product where needed.

Build a working relationship around clear specifications

For repeat orders, retain the approved sample, technical data and agreed process details. This gives both the brand and the supplier a common reference when planning future deliveries and handling changes to colour, construction or finish.

A good supplier should be able to explain what can be confirmed now and what requires a trial or further technical review.
