Preparing knitted fabric for digital printing: what to agree first

Print quality depends on the base knit, preparation, artwork and the selected process. Confirm the technical route with the finishing team and test the result on the intended fabric.

Start with the base fabric and the design

Digital printing is not independent of the material. Fibre content, construction, surface, colour, stretch and finishing influence how artwork appears and how the fabric behaves afterwards.

Provide the intended base, artwork file, repeat or placement, colour references, order size and finished-product requirements. A representative print trial can reveal issues before a larger run.

Agree the preparation process for the chosen technology

The Polish source names different preparation routes for pigment and reactive printing, including “apretura” and “coating”. The correct process depends on the fibre, ink system, machinery and required hand; these terms and their applicability must be confirmed by a qualified technologist for the actual project.

Do not rely on a generic promise of perfect preparation. Agree the process, sample, acceptance criteria and any required tests with the finishing team before production.

Check the printed sample

Review colour, sharpness, pattern alignment, hand, stretch and dimensional change. If the product will be washed, test it under the planned care conditions. For an important collection, assess a sewn garment so the print can be judged at its final scale and placement.
